by changing gears; WE can go the distance

Addiction and the question of what is the solution can be heard echoing in church basements or from grieving families that have lost loved ones to overdose. We are in a pandemic situation in Canada where many lives are lost everyday to this disease. Research suggests a recovery oriented system of care as a solution with supports to help with treatment, peer support, long term care and advocacy.

There are approximately 4 million people in Canada in long term recovery. Kyle Williams is one of these people and he is the visionary that launched Changing Gears. A year ago, while at treatment at Fresh Start Recovery Centre, in Calgary, Alberta, Kyle completed his 12-week treatment program and found that the local fitness community was a strong foundation of his own recovery. He wants to share this message so others can reach out for what they need in their recovery. His goal is to ride his bike across Canada, share his story and provide resources for local Treatment Centres across the country, initiating connections to programs like those that fueled his recovery.

The Changing Gears Movement founded by Kyle Williams in partnership with Fresh Start Recovery Centre will inspire people across Canada that are living in recovery to join local communities that incorporate fitness into their daily lives. The fitness community is full of individuals that challenge others to join them in aspiring to be better, healthier, and happier versions of themselves every day.

This summer, Changing Gears will achieve its dream of breaking down barriers to this community, bridging the connections, and providing financial support where needed.

Cross-Country Route

The cycling journey across Canada begins May 29, 2017 when Kyle and his father, Steve, fly out to St. John’s, NL. The first pedal stroke on the 8,309km trek will occur June 1 and the last is scheduled to take place in the first week of August in Victoria, BC. There will be scheduled stops along the way at Treatment Centres.

Objectives

Kyle will tell his story about how the fitness community enhances his recovery every day and will inspire others to get out and seize a healthy life living in recovery. Creating connections to gyms, studios, and the fitness community is essential to breaking down the barriers between fitness and recovery. Lastly, financial contributions to Treatment Centres will help to cover the costs of setting up fitness programs, purchasing memberships to local gyms and incorporating fitness into their programs.

The ride will embody the four guiding principles that Kyle has made the focus of his daily life:

  • Kindness
  • Authenticity
  • Reliability
  • Love
